March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month
It is estimated that about 1 in 16 men and 1 in 18 women in Canada will develop colon cancer in their lifetime. Do you know about risk factors, symptoms, and if you are up to date for colon cancer screening?
Risk factors for colon cancer include family history, certain medical conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, alcohol, smoking, a diet high in red and processed meat and low in fibre, and lack of physical activity. Screening tests can help detect colon cancer before symptoms develop, and early detection is key to more successful treatment outcomes. In general, adults between the age of 50-74 are recommended to have routine testing, the frequency and type of test will depend on personal and family history. Colorectal cancer is also increasing in younger adults (ages 30-49), therefore preventative measures and early identification of symptoms is important for young adults as well.
