National Immunization Awareness Week

This week, we’re highlighting the importance of immunizations in protecting the health of ourselves, families, and communities. Immunizations are one of the most significant public health advances of the 20th century, are safe and effective, and Canada has one of the most robust vaccine safety systems in the world. Vaccine recommendations are regularly updated as new evidence and findings come forward, and as new vaccines are developed. Sometimes, this can make it hard to know what vaccines you may need and be eligible for.

CANImmunize is an online tool that you can use to store your vaccination records and find out which vaccines you may need. You may not know you need to be caught up on certain vaccines, or that you are eligible for other vaccines as you move through life stages or experience certain health conditions. For Jamati members new to Canada, it is recommended that your immunization history be reviewed by a health care provider (such as your family doctor, nurse, or pharmacist) as you may need additional vaccines.

The Jamat is also asked to take proper precautions when traveling to parts of the world where ongoing measles outbreaks are occurring. This includes Pakistan, India and some other middle and central Asian countries. Recent cases of measles in Canada have included individuals returning from these countries who were not vaccinated against measles. If you are planning a trip, see a primary care provider to review your immunization history and receive at least one dose of measles vaccine prior to travel. The vaccine is safe and more than 90% effective. It is extremely important for children under the age of 5 to be vaccinated prior to travel as measles can lead to severe illness in this age group, including death.
