Depression Can Impact Us All

February 6, 2024 | Canada

As we progress through the winter season in Canada, depression and its many symptoms can be at its peak. Many people struggle, often silently with their moods, thoughts and overall mental health. For some this struggle is seasonal or situational, and for others it is year-round. In this article, we will highlight what depression can look like and what you can do if you find yourself struggling.

Symptoms:

  • Constantly feeling low, sad, or anxious
  • Feeling hopeless and helpless most of the time
  • Have low energy throughout the day
  • Struggle with sleeping and eating – such as sleeping or eating in excess or not enough
  • Thoughts of suicide

*Keep in mind that symptoms are unique to the individual – you might have a combination of symptoms or other symptoms not on this list.

What to do if you find yourself experiencing these symptoms:

  • Speak to a professional about what you are experiencing, such as a family doctor or a therapist/counsellor
  • Make sure you are not isolating yourself, and make effort to spend time with other people
  • Practice self-care which includes taking care of your mind, body, and soul. Review the Five to Thrive for ideas and check out a list of other ideas here.

If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, it’s important that you reach out right away. You can call the Suicide Crisis Line at '9-8-8'.

You can learn more about depression through CAMH, including their free 20-minute course called Depression 101.

As always, if you’re struggling with your mental health, consider reaching out to your health provider and/or contacting a helpline:

  • Wellness Together by texting WELLNESS to 741741
  • Health Navigation Service for help in navigating the health system by calling the ACCESS Line
