Background

Members of the Jamati leadership are sometimes asked questions such as:

  • Do Ismailis follow the 5 pillars of Islam?
  • Who is the Aga Khan?
  • What is the AKDN and how is it funded?
  • What is the role of women in Muslim societies?
  • Why are Jamatkhanas restricted to Ismailis only during times of prayer?

The Ambassadors Program was developed to help provide tools that enable confident responses to these and other questions about our Shia lsmaili Muslim identity posed by government, civil society, Ummah and other members of the broader community. The program provides education on key topics and provides frameworks for responding to questions commonly asked by non-Ismailis about the faith of Islam, the lsmaili Tariqah, the Jamat, Mawlana Hazar Imam and the lmamat, and the work of the Aga Khan Development Network.

What does the program look like?

This iteration of the Ambassadors Program is catered to Jamati institutional leadership. The program will run over 6 weeks and be delivered via Zoom for 2.5 hours each Sunday.

Session #1: Sunday May 12, 8:00 - 10:30 am PST  - Role of Ambassador
Session #2: Sunday May 19, 8:00 - 10:30 am PST  - The Shia Ismaili Muslims
Session #3: Sunday May 26, 8:00 - 10:30 am PST - Beliefs and Practices
Session #4: Sunday June 2, 8:00 - 10:30 am PST - Mawlana Hazar Imam/AKDN
Session #5: Sunday June 9, 8:00 - 10:30 am PST - Women in Muslim Societies
Session #6: Saturday June 16, 8:00 - 10:30 am PST - Conclusion

For those who would like to take advantage of it, there will be an optional one-hour practice session on Wednesdays at 6pm PST.

What is the format of the sessions?

  • The first hour and a half of each Sunday session will involve a presentation of background material, context and an introduction to frequently asked questions.
  • The last hour of each Sunday session is for articulation practice in small groups, during which participants will take turns responding to questions, under the gentle guidance of a trained mentor.
  • Faculty and mentors consist of Waezeen, STEP teachers, scholars, and past AP participants. Material presented by faculty, including required viewing material, is most often shared with participants for future reference.

What is the process to register?

Applications for the program can be submitted online. The application process will close on Friday May 3, 2024

Please note that due to limited capacity and aims for regional diversity, we may not be able to accept all applicants. Those institutional members who applied for but could not be accomodated in the Fall 2023 Ambassador Program for Leadership will be given first preference for this cycle.
