Howdy Everyone! |
The Ismaili Muslim community is unable to host our annual Ismaili Stampede breakfast this year, nor can we enter a float in the Stampede Parade. We have decided to take advantage of our ability to connect online and are celebrating the Stampede virtually. We're excited to share how we are keeping the community spirit alive and how you can too! We encourage you to share this newsletter with your family, friends, neighbors and colleagues and follow us on Instagram, Facebook and on Twitter. |

A Different Kind of Stampede this Year |
This year we are coming together virtually to celebrate the Stampede spirit that makes this city great! We invited a few guests of honor to share their reflections on the Stampede spirit in Calgary. Fauzia Lalani-Khudabux, President of the Ismaili Council for the Prairies, emphasizes that Calgarians are optimistic, resilient, and have demonstrated time and time again that they take care of one another. The Honorable Premier Jason Kenney recognizes the Ismaili Muslim Community’s annual Stampede Breakfast and expresses how much he will miss this year’s ‘bharazi’ dish. His Worship Mayor Nenshi, our “Yahoo in Chief”, kicks off this year’s virtual celebrations by conveying how we can all come together this year – wearing our Stampede hats, honoring Indigenous peoples, celebrating our western spirit, and most importantly - building community. |

Celebrating our Community Spirit - Virtually |
The Ismaili Muslim community in Calgary has always had Stampede spirit – since 1986, annually participating in the Calgary Stampede Parade, and since 1997 hosting an annual Stampede Breakfast at the Ismaili Headquarters Jamatkhana where East truly meets the West! The pandemic hasn’t dampened their community spirit and instead has meant they have been able to find new ways to celebrate together. Calgary has always come together in the toughest of times and the community spirit is what continues to make Calgary a great place to live. Though the city is physically apart, it remains united. Check out this video that keeps the beat of the community spirit alive throughout Stampede week and year round! Hope to host you once again in 2021! Happy Stampede Calgary! |

Learn to Make Our Signature Dish – Bharazi – From the Comfort of Your Home |
Breakfast is often regarded as the ‘most important meal of the day’ and the Calgary Stampede is known for amazing Stampede breakfasts that bring communities together. Along with the traditional pancakes and eggs, many of you have come to enjoy “bharazi”, the signature dish at our annual Ismaili Muslim Stampede Breakfast. The diversity of our community spans more than 25 countries across the world including Central and South Asia, Africa the Middle East, Europe, North America and Austrailia. Bharazi is a traditional East African dish of pigeon peas – mixed with a spicy coconut sauce. This recipe instructional video has been created to give you a taste of our cultural mosaic and so you can make this dish together with your loved ones at home. We encourage you to post and share photos using the hashtag #IsmailiStampede. Bon Appétit! |

Ismaili CIVIC Volunteers Mobilize In Response to the Pandemic |
Ismaili CIVIC volunteers have come together during this global pandemic to support the Calgary community. Volunteers, young and old, have sewn over 1,000 reusable cloth face masks that benefitted essential service workers. During the month of Ramadan, over 5,000 Ibs of fresh and non-perishable food items were donated to the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. In addition, this past month, we organized a blood drive for Canadian Blood Services. The pandemic has highlighted even more the need for each of us to care for one another, and the growing importance of our mental health. Over the course of the next year, Ismaili CIVIC volunteers have committed to serving over 10,000 hours to assist the Kids Help Phone to support youth mental health. We are proud of our commitment to improving quality of life in our community. |

The Greatest At Home Parade |
Our Ismaili Muslim Community has entered a float in the annual Calgary Stampede for the past 34 years, proud to have won several awards along the way, including Best Overall Parade Entry, Best Cultural Entry and Best Western Entry. Floats have represented our shared values of citizenship, pluralism, celebration of the arts and sport, as well as paid tribute to civil society organizations that the Ismaili Muslim community shares values with. Some of these organizations include Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Boys and Girls Club, United Way, among others. We are honoured to be partnering with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) in 2021 in an effort to “Turn Illness to Wellness”. This year, we had to be even more creative and turned to a virtual celebration with “The Greatest At Home Parade”. Float design enthusiasts of all ages were asked to get inspired, imaginative and artistic – and to create their own mini floats, keeping the Stampede spirit alive at home. Yahoo! |
