Choosing a Mask

December 24, 2021 | Canada

With the current rise of COVID-19 cases across Canada, our public health experts share their guidance and tips below on how to select a mask. Given the early evidence that the new Omicron variant is highly transmissible, wearing a mask in community settings continues to be an important way we can protect ourselves and our families this holiday season.

Tip 1: Choose a 3-layer mask that is well-constructed and well-fitting.

With the rise of the Omicron variant, the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Centre for Disease Control and the World Health Organization all continue to recommend 3-layer or 3-ply masks. Make sure you continue to choose a mask that is well-constructed, well-fitting, and worn properly covering both your nose, mouth and chin. Masks should not have openings or gaps on the sides over your cheeks.

No matter which type of mask you choose, proper fit is a key factor in its effectiveness.

If you are looking for a medical mask to wear, a KN95 does not require fit testing, making it easier to wear and sit tight on the face without gaps.

Don’t use masks or respirators with exhalation valves. They allow infectious respiratory particles to escape. They do not help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Tip 2: If you are selecting a medical mask from stores, look for a construction guarantee on the box or the mask.

The following construction guarantees or certifications are recommended:

  • FDA (U.S Food and Drug Administration)
  • CSA Certified
  • ISO Certified
  • NSF

Tip 3: Make sure you are wearing your mask correctly.

Watch our video tutorial on how to put on and take off your mask correctly: How to Wear A Mask.

Tip 4: Wear a mask in busy community settings and crowded areas.

Consider wearing a mask in shared spaces with people from outside of your immediate household. This is especially important indoors, whether in private or public settings.
