District Spotlight Series: Lethbridge Part 1

September 22, 2021 | Prairies

Lethbridge is a sunny city and enjoys Chinook winds that bring respite to break up the cold winter months. It is a gem for outdoor activities as there is an abundance of hiking and biking trails. For aquatic activities, Oldman River allows you to experience fishing, paddling, or canoeing. You should also keep an eye out for the coulee formations which are unique to the area. The word "coulee” is derived from a French-Canadian word meaning “to flow”, and in this instance refers to canyons or valleys identifiable by steep sides that resulted from water erosion. Coulees are an extension of the badlands of southern Alberta.

Another unique feature in Lethbridge is the Lethbridge Viaduct (a.k.a. High Level Bridge), which is part of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and is the largest railway structure in Canada. It crosses the Oldman River and had its construction completed in 1909. It is an engineering marvel that stands the test of time and is still used today.

The University of Lethbridge is situated on coulees, enabling students to enjoy breathtaking views as they look out of their classroom or lecture-hall windows. The University of Lethbridge is renowned for its stellar academics, including the “Canadian Centre for Behaviour and Neuroscience”.

A city not too large nor too small, Lethbridge provides ease of commute and navigation in addition to many amenities. This provides Jamati members with plenty of unique employment and volunteering activities. For example, outside of Jamatkhana and school, students can volunteer or seek employment at the Big Brothers & Big Sisters, the Public Library, and the YWCA, to name a few.

Tune in to learn more about our Lethbridge Jamat.
